Two paintings "Flooded Field " 4x7 and "End of Day" 4x7 painted in gouache on paper, The "Finished Sketch" and the term preliminary study are nearly identical in meaning,but if the painting sketch is placing the emphasis on an appreciation of the essential artistic qualities of each sketch, rather than on how a sketch relates to a further work,then we could say we have a finished painted sketch.
